ART CLASSES
“Explore your creative side, develop a richer appreciation of life through your artistic expression.”
Over the course of my career, it has always been a regular request as to whether I do art classes. For me as an artist, the learning never stops, I believe my artwork is always evolving (be it rather slowly) and it would be wrong of me to ever think I know all that I need to know about art. Being a self taught artist, I have never had formal art lessons, so I knew little of what people would expect from me as a teacher. When I work on a painting, a large portions of what I do is instinctive, hundreds of subconscious decisions are made that I would now have to attempt to verbalize to my students. So the challenge was there, but the results from my students have been great. The guarantee I give is that the quality of the students’ artwork will undoubtedly improve.
Being comfortable in any medium, I let the student choose what they wish to work with, be it charcoal, pastel, watercolour, acrylic or oils. Students can also decide on what subject matter they wish to paint, I think this creates a great variety of artwork being worked on in class, but ultimately the finished artwork maybe a colour coordinated decorator piece for the living room, a gift for a friends, a portrait or perhaps a piece to sell.
The artist’s lifestyle can be a solitary one, as you work away in your studio, but I find the type of individual who wishes to attend an art class has been generally delightful, and now, I would regard many as good friends. My goal for the classes was for it to be a social outing for the participant, while at the same time improving their art skills, for anyone from beginners to the more skilful artist. Class groups are kept small (no more than 10 students), they run for 3 hours at four different times during the week. Philip intends to commence a Life Drawing class in the near future.
Quote from student Brylie –
“Making the decision to attend Phil’s class was one of the best decisions
I made regarding my art. He is a very talented artist and has so much knowledge and skill to share with his students. I look forward to attending each class and thoroughly enjoy the wonderful learning environment he has created.”
