“Years ago I was invited by the University of Queensland to join a survey team to explore the Ngarrabullgan Mountain Range in Northern Queensland. An opportunity to share a unique part of Australia with biologists, archaeologists, geologists and others, would have to rate as one of the most fascinating times of my life.

The survey site was within the boundary of a working cattle station then owned by the Kuku Djungan Aboriginal Community where Sammy was one of the elders, and did most of the organising and running of the station. So when I met Sammy, I knew I would not be just drawing the wildlife and it’s environment, his face and that classic northern Australian Jackaroo physique and attire just beckoned to be painted as a portrait.” - Phil
